Adventures in the North: Aberdeenshire and Moray

Sunday, Pat and I booked a Co-Wheels car for the day to explore several points north of Aberdeen.  After an early start, homemade bacon and sausage rolls packed, and a quick stop en route to the car at Caffe Nero for coffee and tea, we were off!  It was a beautiful drive through the country, enhanced by our creative route, i.e. missing a few turns dictated by Google Maps.

Our first stop was Portknockie to see Bow Fiddle Rock.

We drove through Cullen to get to Bow Fiddle Rock, catching sight of the beach, and thought we should stop there before continuing on our preplanned route.  After our stop at the beach, we found a warm spot in town for a coffee/tea, built in 1821: a cafe attached to a B&B, apparently owned by a very friendly English couple.

The next stop was Findlater Castle.

The rainbow was the highlight of the day.  It was so vivid and we could, it appeared, see where it ended.  Truly awesome.

Our final stop was Portsoy.  We had lunch there first, then visited the 17th century harbor which was on our list for the day--partially because it was a filming location for the remake of Whisky Galore!

It was a beautiful autumn day out, albeit windy and cool and ultimately, exhausting.  Another adventurous day, collecting experiences (and photos)!

Partial credit, once again, goes to Pat for some of the photos.

Walking at Loch Muick

Last weekend we finally made it to Loch Muick on the Balmoral Estate near Ballatar, walking the nearly eight-mile loop around.  The wind was exceptionally strong.  I only lost my cap once, but the wind nearly tripped me a few times, side winds nearly blowing one leg in front of the other.  Otherwise, the sun was shining and the views were stunning.  This was one of my favorite walks in Scotland so far.

We saw this guy when we arrived and he was still eating when we left.

Queen Victoria's "Widow's House"

The wind was so strong, it made the water appear tidal.

Thanks again to Pat and Stan for a few of the photos.
